how to share wifi password

You should not have to read the password aloud across a cafe table. Here is how to share wifi password from the devices people already carry, and how to do it without handing the main network to everyone.

From an iPhone

Both phones need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on, and the phones should be unlocked and close together. On the guest phone, open Wi-Fi and tap your network. A prompt appears on your phone asking to share the password. Tap Share. Apple sends it directly. You never see the characters, and it only works with someone in your contacts or with a confirmation on your screen.

From an Android phone

Open Settings, then Wi-Fi or Internet, and tap the gear next to the connected network. Choose Share, then confirm with your fingerprint, face, or PIN. The phone shows a QR code. The other person scans it with their camera. Some phones also reveal the password as text after you unlock. That text is easy to copy into a message, which is less private than the QR code.

From the router

The sticker on the router still has the original name and password if nobody changed them. Guest can type that in. If you changed it, sign in to the router admin page and read the wireless password there. Write it on a card at home if guests visit often. Do not photograph that card and post it.

A safer habit

Turn on the guest network in the router and share that password instead. Guests get internet and stay off your printers, drives, and cameras. When someone no longer needs access, change only the guest password. After any change, test internet speed once on the main network so you know the router restart did not leave you with a weak link.

Back on your own network, test internet speed in the room that matters and compare download, upload, and jitter.
